Most sites still need a paper backup for outages, emergencies or areas where devices are not allowed, but printing a digital procedure often produces something much longer than the original because every field, checkbox and sign off gets its own line. That makes the backup harder to use than the paper procedure it replaced.
The print version should be designed as its own format, compact and close to what operators are used to, with only the checks and sign offs that actually matter on paper. Anything recorded on the paper copy should then be easy to enter back into the digital record so the history stays in one place.
