Most sites already have a CMMS, a document control system and some kind of permit process, and replacing all of them at once is a long and risky project that most operations teams do not want. Modernizing control of work does not have to mean ripping everything out.

The practical approach is to start where the pain is, usually permits and procedures in the field, and connect to the existing systems for work orders and documents rather than duplicating them. That way the field gets a better tool quickly, and the systems of record stay in place while the new layer proves itself.
